When taking the wire casing (cage) off a a champagne cork the coiled part of the wire will turn 6.5 times
Why 6 turns?
In the early days of champagne production a lot of bottles were lost due to the corks popping off. Moet Chandon did some experimenting and discovered the 6 turns was enough to keep the cork secure, and other champagne houses followed.
Other theories suggest that the number 6 represents the 6 levels of atmospheric pressure inside the champagne bottle. The French also regard the number 6 as representing eternal happiness.
